A vector function is a function that takes a number of inputs and returns a vector. For simplicity lets keep things in 2 dimensions and call those inputs (x) and (y).At a point (xy) we plot the value of dlvf(xy) as a vector with tail ancgraphicd at (xy) such as in the following figure. We repeat this over a set of points (xy) so VectorPlot treats the variables x and y as local effectively using Block. VectorPlot has attribute HoldAll and evaluates the v i etc. only after graphicigning specific numerical values to x and y .

You can visualize a vector field by plotting vectors on a regular grid by plotting a selection of streamlines or by using a gradient color scheme to ilgraphicrate vector and streamline densities. You can also plot a vector field from a list of vectors as opposed to a mapping. In the image above we can see the vector field plot for the differential equation [fracdydxyx] The small blue arrows (vectors) indicate the tendency (shape) of the solutions of the differential equation between the boundaries of the plot.MathWorks Machine Translation. Arguments x y. two vectors which define the grid. fx. a matrix which describes the x component of the vector field. fx(ij) is the x component of the vector field at point (x(i)y(j)).As far as I can tell gnuplot can only plot vector fields when reading data from a file. Your file will have to have 4 columns x y deltax and delta y and gnuplot will then plot a vector from (xy) to (xdeltax ydeltay) for each line in the fileExample 3 Sketch the gradient vector field for (fleft( xy right) x2 y2) as well as several contours for this function. Show Solution Recall that the contours for a function are nothing more than curves defined by
